Good news! Scan&Fly has won the prestigious “red dot award: product design 2013″
14 March 2013Scan&Fly is not only fast, easy and retrofit, but is now also recognised for its high quality design.
The innovative power of Type22 impressed the 37-member jury of experts for the “red dot award: product design 2013”. The jury chose Scan&Fly from 4,662 entries in 19 different categories in this year’s competition. Only the best designs were able to win the enthusiasm of the jury, which is how Scan&Fly received the red dot for its successful design creation. Scan&Fly is designed with Dutch design bureau VanBerlo.

A unique Self Bag Drop
The vision and product philosophy behind Scan&Fly are exceptional for the airport industry. In an industry dominated by large integrated solution providers and heavy legacy systems, Scan&Fly presents itself as a “plug-and-play” innovation that is the absolute opposite. A complete focus on design-for-passenger-interaction and a service-oriented architecture approach to the back-end software interfaces, make Scan&Fly a unique Self Bag Drop.
The compact design and the stainless steel support frame allows Scan&Fly to fit seamlessly in every existing airport interior, so existing check-in desks and conveyer belts can be used. This is absolutely unique compare to other Self Bag Drop systems which require a full overhaul of the existing check-in desks.
High quality design
Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot: “The winners of the ‘red dot award: product design 2013′ are the protagonists of a highly developed design culture and design industry. These days it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish between well-designed products. It is often only in the details that the special qualities become apparent. However, those product creations that pass the test before the critical eyes of the international red dot jury will not disappear into the crowd and will be able to fend off global competition.”
Type22 paper 1.2. Variation in self bag drop passenger handling times
19 December 2012Airports and airlines world-wide are considering automation of the bag drop process for passengers. In an earlier paper the effect on the waiting time was shown for one-stop or two-stop self bag drop processes. This paper will look into the passenger handling times in more detail. Depending on the complexity of a process step, large differences in handling times may occur. What is the effect of this variation in the process time on the overal capacity of the self bag drop system? Under what circumstances is this effect signicant? And finally, how should the departure process be organised for a smooth process flow?

Type22 paper 1.1. Self bag drop: 1-stop or 2-stop
14 December 2012Airports and airlines world-wide are considering the implementation of self bag drop to speed up the departure process of passengers: service to passengers is improved and handling costs are reduced. One of the key issues to decide upon is whether or not to split the bag drop process into multiple steps. Should bag tagging be done at the self bag drop point (SBD), or is it more ecient to do this at a separate kiosk? Based on simulation results, this introductory paper specically addresses the impact of a 1- vs. 2-stop self bag drop process on passenger queuing time and shows that a 2-stop process is in fact more ecient. The goal is to provide understanding about why the 2-stop process is more advantageous and give insights that can be helpful when making decisions about the implementation of self bag drop.

Type22 sends former intern on a trip to Vienna
21 September 2012As a former intern of Type22 – back then still with the former name – I was invited to the name-changing party in June. By asking every visitor to fill out a small note, Type22 wanted to gain some feedback and meanwhile everyone was tricked into a lottery. At first, I didn’t know the lottery part, but I may not complain: I won the first price, a trip to Vienna last weekend!
I visited Vienna before: a beautiful city, with it’s most famous landmark the Schönbrünn palace. This time I wanted to find out the more exciting side of Vienna. So last weekend I took off with a friend of mine. Since my internship at Type22 I cannot pass an airport anymore without trying all check-in and bag drop machines. Well, after that little distraction at the airport, we were set to go: based in an hotel near the Vienna messe (fair grounds), we found out that Vienna had a lot to offer. During the trip we enjoyed a very nice combination of sightseeing the city, enjoying the exciting night life, and another famous landmark: the famous wiener schnitzel. And of course, we couldn’t leave without passing the Schönbrünn palace: the nice weather allowed a long stroll in the palace gardens (see picture).
Now, back in Holland again, a big thanks to Type22 is in place! The best of success with making travelling to these places even more convenient!
